Decorative wooden foot stove with original earthenware fire test – rich wood carving – 1960s–1970s influence, 19th century test

A particularly decorative wooden foot stove, complete with a loose earthenware coal-bowl / fire test. This specimen is probably a later, decorative version from around the 1960s–1970s, inspired by the traditional Dutch foot stoves.

The stove is built as a compact wooden cabinet with an open front and is richly adorned all around with geometric and floral wood carving. Especially the large central rosette motif on the top surface and the carved patterns on the side panels give the object a distinctly artisanal look. The dark corner posts and profiled top and bottom edges provide additional depth and contrast.

Historically, foot stoves were used to keep the feet warm. In the wooden cabinet, a earthenware or metal test was placed with glowing coals; the rising heat warmed the feet and lower legs. Such stoves were very common in Dutch houses and churches. Museum collections describe this exact use, with a fire test containing glowing coals placed in the wooden cabinet.

This specimen retains the accompanying earthenware coal-bowl. This makes the piece not only decorative but also attractive as a complete collectible object. The bowl is glazed in a warm brown-orange tone and has a practical handle on the side.

Condition: good used vintage condition with normal age- and wear-related signs. The wood shows localized scratches, light wear, small discolorations, and some spots on edges and corners.
