Icon - Glass, Wood, Plaster

A collection of four religious icon objects, consisting of a framed depiction of the Virgin Mary with the Child and three decorative, hand-painted egg-shaped icons with separate black mounts.

The framed icon shows the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child in a color-intense, strongly outlined representation with a clear reference to Romanian Orthodox folk art. On the back there is a handwritten inscription, including the legible note “Făgăraș, Jud. Brașov.” A definite attribution to a particular artist is not known.

The three egg-shaped icons depict different Christian scenes, including Christ Pantocrator, the Virgin Mary with Child, and a Christ/Resurrection scene. They are each presented on a black-finished, ornamentally designed stand.

The exact material or painting technique of the framed icon as well as of the egg-shaped panels has not been conclusively determined. Accordingly, in particular the eggs are not expressly guaranteed to be ostrich eggs or any other natural material.

The objects are in an authentic used condition with signs of age and wear. In particular the three egg icons show abrading, color loss, chipping and surface traces. Frames and mounts also show corresponding signs of use. The existing marks and damages were intentionally documented in the pictures and not concealed.

The collection comes from an estate liquidation and is offered in the condition found. Please regard all photos as part of the condition description.
