Description from the seller

Rarest high-relief crucifix tile out of production, created and signed by Pietro Melandri.

Pietro Melandri was born in Faenza in 1885 and is among the most important Italian ceramists of the 20th century.
In 1921, the year he participated with some ceramics in the First Rome Biennale, he founded together with businessman Umberto Focaccia the Melandri-Focaccia factory.
In 1925 they were present at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and in 1930 at the Triennale of Monza.
In 1933 he participated with some ceramics in the Milan Triennale.
Awarded at the Milan Triennale of Art in 1936, in 1937 he achieved tremendous success at the Paris Exposition Universelle where he was recognized as the most important of the Italian ceramists and where he was awarded the Grand Prize.
In the postwar period, Melandri, with whom the leading figures of 20th-century ceramics collaborated over the years, gave life to a rich and original production that, while drawing on the Faenza ceramic tradition, is full of a strong and compelling modernity, making him one of the great master ceramists of the century.
Pietro Melandri, active until the age of 86, died in Faenza in 1976.
