AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Sublime scene of a shipwreck dated 1874, depicting a sailing vessel adrift in a raging sea, men rushing to help the crew, some having fallen into the water.

Romantic theme par excellence, popularized by painters such as Eugène ISABEY or Théodore GUDIN, the style and technique obviously reminded us of Jules NOËL when this painting was acquired eight years ago (kept since in our private collection).

We had, moreover, found a composition a few years ago that was identical in every respect, naïvely painted where it was inscribed "d’après Jules NOËL" which suggested that the original had been painted by the latter.

The painting appears to be monogrammed "J.D" and will therefore be sold as "French school 19th century".

Oil on canvas

42 x 65 cm (sold without frame)

Monogrammed bottom right and dated 74 (for 1874)

Superb presentation, the painting was cleaned by a professional restorer in 2019 (a few overpaints not visible)

AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED - Sale with invoice from our gallery

*** We are a gallery specialized in 19th- and 20th-century paintings and drawings; we are preparing the catalogue raisonné of the painter Ferdinand GUELDRY and we work with the major auction houses (Sotheby’s, Doyle, Koller...) to authenticate his works.
