A charming Sado Mumyoi-yaki tea bowl by Ito Sekisui of the Sekisui-gama kiln on Sado Island. The bowl shows the soft, warm palette characteristic of Mumyoi ware, thrown with visible spiral ridges and a gently uneven, hand-formed rim. It comes complete with its original wooden tomobako storage box, inscribed and sealed by the artist.
【Artist Profile】
Ito Sekisui is a hereditary name carried by the potters of the Sekisui-gama kiln on Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture, a lineage stretching back to the late Edo period. The kiln is celebrated for Mumyoi-yaki, ceramics made from the iron-rich "mumyoi" clay unique to Sado's former gold mines, which fires to a distinctive reddish-brown tone.
