Description from the seller
Arnout Colnot (1887–1983) – Still Life with Red Flowers – Oil on Canvas – Bergen School
Beautiful and highly expressive floral still life by the renowned Dutch painter Arnout Colnot (1887–1983), an important representative of the Bergen School.
The painting depicts a vibrant bouquet of red flowers arranged in a dark blue vase. Colnot has used a powerful and expressive technique, applying the oil paint in thick layers with energetic brushwork and pronounced impasto.
The intense reds and oranges of the flowers contrast beautifully with the deep greens, blues and darker tones of the composition. The large flower in the foreground is especially striking and has an almost sculptural quality due to the substantial build up of paint.
The work is signed lower left: “A. Colnot”.
Arnout Colnot was associated with the Bergen School, one of the important movements within Dutch expressionism. His oeuvre includes landscapes, village views and still lifes, often characterised by robust brushwork, strong colour contrasts and a distinctly expressive atmosphere.
A particularly valuable feature of this work is its high quality handmade frame by Gehring & Heijdenrijk, one of the best known traditional frame makers in the Netherlands, with a history dating back to the 19th century. The frame has been entirely handmade in their workshop and retains the original Gehring & Heijdenrijk label and guarantee number on the reverse. It is a substantial and very well made frame that complements the painting beautifully.
