Second edition of "The Temptation of Saint Anthony" published in the year of the original, very well established in an agreeable period binding in half-chagrin citron. Spine with gold-embossed raised bands, mosaic endpapers.

Flaubert had written a first, more developed version of this text, which he read to Maxime Du Camp and Louis Bouilhet before his departure for the East in 1849. A second version, shorter, was to appear in 1856, but Flaubert was frightened after the Madame Bovary trial. It was not until 1874 that he published the definitive version, markedly different from the other two.

Condition: binding in very good condition, the spine slightly shaded. Interior clean with fine scattered foxing. Beautiful copy, not trimmed.
