Nara's work underwent a radical turning point after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami of March 2011 and the Fukushima nuclear disaster, which occurred only seventy kilometers north of his studio. Deeply marked by these events, Nara painted “In the Milky Lake/Thinking One,” the portrait of a girl with a grave expression, her eyes closed, wearing a green dress and half-submerged in a barely visible puddle of water; it was his only major work of 2011.
The painting by Yoshitomo Nara, “In the Milky Lake Thinking One,” depicts what appears to be a small androgynous child, dressed in a soft green dress, standing alone in the middle of nothingness. This child is a projection of the artist, Nara, and expresses his emotions during the natural disaster.
