Description

Notable oil on paper mounted to board, signed L. Moutard, probably created during the first third of the 20th century.

The work depicts a young mother nursing her child in a rural landscape with a North African or Mediterranean appearance, with human figures and animals in the background.

The composition is completely dominated by the mother and child group. The female figure occupies a large portion of the pictorial surface and adopts a pyramidal, well-balanced structure, while the tilt of the head and the enveloping movement of the arms focus all attention on the child.

One of the most striking aspects of the painting is its treatment of light. The whites of the headscarf and clothing are built up through a rich range of creams, pinks, grays, and ochres, while the flesh tones are articulated through warm planes that provide volume without resorting to excessively academic modeling.

The brushwork is confident, broad, and synthetic. The faces, hands, and the child’s body show solid drawing ability, while the landscape is progressively simplified with stains and silhouettes, reinforcing the prominence of motherhood.

Specially noteworthy is the handling of the hands, the mother’s tilted head, and the child’s body, whose arrangement convincingly conveys both the weight and the physical intimacy of the gesture.

The scene also has an evident symbolic dimension. The mother–child relationship recalls the long Western tradition of the Madonna lactans, although here the religious motif transforms into a scene of everyday life. The mother does not pose for the viewer: she appears fully concentrated on feeding and protecting the child, contributing to the composition a notable sense of intimacy and contemplation.

The rural landscape, the animals, and the figures in the background visually broaden this idea of life, care, and continuity.

In terms of pictorial language, formal synthesis, and construction through color planes, the work can be stylistically situated in the first third of the 20th century. Its setting is compatible with the renewal of North African painting developed by numerous European and French artists during these decades.

The full identity of L. Moutard remains undetermined at present. The signature is clearly visible, but to date sufficient documentation has not been found to securely associate it with a specific artistic biography, which adds an extra interest for collectors involved in researching little-documented artists.

Overall condition in keeping with its age. Surface craquelure and small irregularities typical of the technique and support are visible.
