He played his first three years at Mauldin High School in South Carolina. He was named Mr. Basketball in the state of South Carolina during his junior year in 1994. Then he transferred to Farragut High School in Illinois for his senior year of high school. During his senior year he was named National High School Player of the Year by USA Today and was selected for Parade Magazine All-America First Team after he led Farragut to a 28-2 finish and the Class AA state quarterfinals. He was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois with averages of 25.2 points, 17.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 6.5 blocks while shooting 66.6% from the field.

Garnett, whose four-year high school basketball statistics totaled 2,533 points, 1,807 rebounds and 739 blocks, was named Most Outstanding Player of the McDonald's All-America Game where he posted 18 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks.

Kevin Garnett declared himself eligible for the 1995 NBA Draft straight out of Farragut Academy High School in Chicago. Most players go to college first to be drafted from there.

In 1995 he began his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, who that year, due to poor results in the previous season, were among the first teams allowed to pick from the young talents. They drafted him fifth overall in Round One. In 2003-2004 he was named MVP of the season.

The Boston Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves for Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair, a 2009 First Round Draft Pick (Top 3 Protected) and a return of Minnesota's First Round Draft Pick previously secured in the Ricky Davis–Wally Szczerbiak deal plus some cash.

With the Celtics Garnett joined a team with star players Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, who had arrived earlier that month from the Seattle SuperSonics. For the Celtics, the arrival of Garnett and Allen marked the start of a new era. With three veteran stars at the top of the NBA, complemented by young talents such as Rajon Rondo, the Celtics immediately won the NBA Championship in 2008 by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals 4-2. In 2010 he again reached the NBA Finals with the Celtics, but this time lost to the Lakers, by 4-3.

In the summer of 2013 Garnett was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, along with his teammate Paul Pierce.

In February 2015 Garnett returned to the team where he began his NBA career, the Minnesota Timberwolves.

On Saturday, September 24, 2016, Kevin Garnett announced his retirement after a 21-season career.
