A bold floral work by Belgian-Greek contemporary artist Dimitri Likissas (b. 1969), created in his distinctive monochrome dot language.

At first glance, the composition appears almost abstract: a field of black dots expanding and contracting across a soft pink background. Step back, however, and the image resolves into hibiscus flowers.

This transformation between abstraction and recognition is central to Likissas’s practice: from close, only dots; from afar, the image.

The work is constructed entirely through changes in dot size and spacing. No outlines or conventional drawing are used. The floral image emerges optically from the relationship between the dots and the surrounding pink ground.

The result is both graphic and organic: a familiar natural subject translated into a contemporary raster language.

Dimitri Likissas has developed his dot-based visual language over many years across painting, printmaking and sculpture. His work has been exhibited internationally through galleries and exhibitions in Europe, the United States and the Caribbean.

His practice explores optical perception, repetition and the point at which abstraction becomes figuration. Flowers, portraits, symbols and contemporary imagery are reduced to one fundamental visual element: the dot.

This work forms part of a dedicated Catawiki series, created in a direct monochrome format while preserving the same visual language found in Likissas’s larger gallery works.

Likissas’s larger and more complex works are normally presented through galleries at substantially higher price levels. This series has been developed specifically for Catawiki to make an original work from his established practice accessible to a broader group of collectors while preserving the essential technique, scale and artistic identity.
