This distinctive Oribe ware handled tray was created by Yamaguchi Shigeru, featuring a broad circular form surmounted by a high arched handle. The piece combines deep green Oribe glaze with areas of exposed light clay decorated in freely brushed iron-brown patterns.
The interior is painted with stylized floral and geometric motifs, while the exterior alternates bold green glaze with vertical brushwork, creating a lively contrast between color, texture, and line. The substantial handle gives the vessel a strong sculptural presence while retaining the practical character of a traditional tebon or handled serving tray.
The irregular glazing, expressive brush decoration, and warm clay body embody the spontaneous aesthetic associated with Oribe ceramics. A striking example of contemporary Japanese studio pottery, suitable for display or as a functional serving piece.
