Wonderful and authentic pair of antique wooden skates, featuring wooden footbeds, steel runners and original leather mounting straps. The brand “GUSTAV HENCKEL – REMSCHEID” is clearly visible on the runners, making these skates especially interesting for collectors of historical winter sports gear and old everyday objects.

Comparable Gustav Henckel skates from Remscheid are dated to around 1880–1900. An almost identical marked pair was previously offered on Catawiki as antique wooden cross-country skates from that period. It is noted that Gustav Henckel supplied his skates to Dutch traders and that skates of his manufacture were already sold in the Netherlands in the late 19th century.

The shape is characteristic of traditional wooden skates from the late 19th century: a long wooden footbed, strongly rising front, steel blade along the full underside, and an extensive system of leather bands to securely attach the boot to the skate. The small metal knobs on the curled-up noses form a handsome historical detail.

A particularly attractive aspect is that this pair retains much of the original leatherwork, including buckles, heel pieces and long straps. This gives the skates not only collector value but also a strong decorative character.

Condition
In authentic used antique condition. The wood shows clear wear, scratches, discoloration and dark use traces. The metal parts have oxidation and age patina. The leather is heavily aged, dry and locally cracked or worn, as expected for material of this age.
