Artist
Casparus Johannes Morel (1798–1861) was an Amsterdam painter. His work includes seascapes with sailing ships, set within Dutch Romantic painting.
Object description
The scene shows several sailing ships on a rough sea beneath an expansive bank of clouds. To the left of center lies a large ship with light sails, finely depicted rigging and a Dutch flag. On the foreground right, a smaller vessel with brown and reddish-brown sails is sailing. Small figures are indicated on both vessels. Distant ships trace along the horizon.
The water is predominantly green-brown, with dark troughs and white crests. The sky consists of gray and white cloud masses, interspersed with light-blue openings. The light sails of the left ship form a pronounced accent.
Technique and material analysis
The painting is executed in oil on a wooden panel. The rigging and hull lines are depicted with fine lines; the figures consist of small brushstrokes. In the sky, gradual tonal transitions prevail. Short, curved brushstrokes describe the waves, with separate white highlights for foam and spray. The paint layer is locally thin. On the back there is a paper label with the attribution to Morel.
Composition and form analysis
The low horizon gives the cloudscape a large share of the image plane. The two principal ships form unequal accents on either side of the center. Their different scale and placement, together with the smaller vessels on the horizon, support the sense of depth. Masts and rigging introduce vertical and diagonal lines above the predominantly horizontal water surface.
The dark foreground contrasts with the lighter horizon and sky. The reddish-brown sail on the right provides a warm color accent against the blue-gray surroundings. Repeated white crests connect the foreground to the ships.
Stylistic and art-historical context
The emphasis on agitated water, expansive cloud formations, and varying lighting aligns with Romantic marine painting. The detailed ship depiction and spatial arrangement fit within the Dutch tradition of the seascape. These features support the stylistic placement but do not by themselves establish authorship.
Comparable artists
Johannes Christiaan Schotel, Hermanus Koekkoek, Louis Meijer, Clarkson Stanfield, Théodore Gudin
Condition
The paint layer is thin in places. The painting has recently been restored and contains minimal retouchings.
Conclusion
Dutch ships at sea can be stylistically situated within nineteenth-century Romantic marine painting. A more precise dating has not been established. The unsigned panel bears on the back a attribution label to Casparus Johannes Morel; authorship remains uncertain. The work has been recently restored and shows locally a thin paint layer and minimal retouchings.
