About the author

Ruth Mercier (1880–1913) was a painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her production is framed in the European artistic context of her time, marked by the evolution from naturalism toward freer and more atmospheric forms of representation. In this work the interest in the everyday scene and in the agile execution typical of watercolor is especially evident.

Description of the work

Genre-scene set in a port or fishing environment. In the foreground there is a group of figures seated on the ground beside a large boat, probably fishermen gathered during a pause in their labor. The figures are resolved with blobs of color and quick strokes, without excessive development of detail, reinforcing the sense of a scene observed directly from nature.

In the background there is a cluster of popular buildings with ochre and whitish façades, among which doors, small windows, roofs and various elements related to maritime activity can be distinguished. A second boat and different rigging complete the port atmosphere.

The author uses a restrained palette of earth tones, ochres, grays and blues. The characteristic transparency of watercolor allows shadows and volumes to be built up through the layering of glazes, while certain areas are only suggested. This economy of resources gives the composition notable spontaneity and a calm, everyday atmosphere.

Description of the frame

The work is presented with a classic, richly ornamented gilded frame, with decorative inner moldings and large relief vegetal motifs concentrated especially in the corners. It includes a light mat, visually separating the watercolor from the frame and enhancing the composition. At the bottom there is a plaque bearing the name “Ruth Mercier 1880–1913.”
