About Francesco Londonio

Francesco Londonio (Milan, 1723–1783) was an Italian painter and engraver especially recognized for his pastoral and genre scenes. He carried out much of his activity in the Milanese art milieu and made shepherds, peasants and animals the protagonists of numerous compositions. His works are distinguished by warm, earthy tones, restrained lighting and a picturesque view of rural life.

Description of the work

The composition depicts a full-length young shepherd, placed in a dark and austere environment. He appears slightly inclined and holds with one hand a long pastoral staff that runs vertically through a large part of the composition.

The figure wears humble clothes and a broad cloak in brown and ochre tones that partially covers his body. The face, gently inclined, presents an introspective expression that lends the scene a serene and restrained character. The figure emerges from a predominantly dark background through a soft illumination that concentrates attention on the face, the hands, and the folds of the clothing.

The restricted color palette, based essentially on browns, ochres and earth tones, reinforces the rustic character of the representation. The work responds to the taste for pastoral and peasant scenes developed in the painting of northern Italy during the 18th century.

Description of the frame

The work is presented with an antique golden wooden frame, with a molded profile and a sober design. It shows visible losses and wear on the gilding, abrasions, small knocks and superficial faults, consistent with its age, which lend the whole ensemble a marked historical character.
