It also collects numerous medical consultations, often presented in the form of detailed clinical cases, in which the physician examines the symptoms, the patient’s constitution, the evolution of the disease, and the remedies deemed appropriate according to the medical knowledge of the time.
Giuseppe Del Papa (Empoli, 1648 – Florence, 1735) was one of the most authoritative figures in Tuscan medicine of his time. After teaching at the Pisa Studium, he became physician to the Medici court and archiater of the Court of Tuscany, succeeding some of the most important physicians of the Florentine milieu. He was also a member of the Accademia della Crusca and of various literary and scientific academies.
The collection of consultations was published in Rome in 1733 thanks to the editorial activity of Giovanni Gaetano Bottari, who had personal and professional relations with Del Papa. The 1733 edition is regarded as the first publication of the collection; subsequent posthumous editions followed, such as that of 1751.
