The wall is painted in dense, close-together strokes, green on green, dotted with whites and dark shadows until the surface ceases to be masonry and becomes foliage: architecture and garden merge in the same beating pulse. Three arched windows open like violet wells in the thick growth, and the road below is a carpet of lilac and apricot pebbles, each marked by a single brushstroke. Over it rise balloons in red, yellow, pink, blue — crisp, light bodies that cut through the bustle with their fullness of color. Where old painting sought the quiet absorption of a sunlit wall, here the same quiet is invaded by a party: no figures, only traces of merriment just past or just begun. What remains is the vertigo of a silent place that has decided, for one day, to be in celebration.
