This magnificent panel depicts Saint Lucy, martyr and patroness of sight. The Crown of Candles and the Fire: Upon her head she wears the crown with lit candles, and in her hands she holds the flame, bright symbols of her name (Lucia derives from lux, light) and of the burning testimony of faith that overcomes darkness.
The White Mantle and the Vermilion Ribbon: The snowy robe symbolizes immaculate purity and divine grace, while the vermilion red ribbon recalls the blood of martyrdom and heroic charity.
Technical Specifications and Craftsmanship
Dimensions and Support: 30 x 40 cm, with a thickness of 1 cm. The wooden board is completely smooth and free of recesses, prepared by hand with plaster.
Byzantine Technique: Entirely handmade following the rigorous canons of the tradition, using the ancient egg tempera technique with natural pigments.
Author and Provenance
The work is signed by master Marco Palumbo, native of Monte Sant'Angelo. The author earned the prestigious iconographer credential at the historic abbey of Pulsano, where monks transmitted to him the ancient and strict Byzantine egg tempera technique with which this icon was created.
