Description from the seller
Justinian / Iunti (Giunti) - Corpus Iuris Civilis (Opera Omnia) - 5 Complete Volumes - 1598
Splendid monumental folio edition printed in Venice by the Giunti, in contemporary full parchment bindings with calligraphic tooling.
Rare and monumental complete edition in 5 folio volumes of the Corpus Iuris Civilis of Emperor Justinian, printed in Venice in 1598 (MDXCVIII) by the famed Giunti printing house (Apud Iuntas).
The work, a milestone of Western law, presents in its monumental and complete structure, enriched by the massive Glossa Ordinaria (Accursius, Contius, Cuiacius, Duarenus) laid out in two columns around the elegant central text.
The set includes all 5 volumes:
Tomus Primus: Digestum Vetus seu Pandectarum Iuris Civilis
Tomus Secundus: Infortiatum seu Pandectarum Iuris Civilis
Tomus Tertius: Digestum Novum seu Pandectarum Iuris Civilis
Tomus Quartus: Codicis Iustiniani Sacratissimi Principis Imperatoris Augusti (Libri IX Priores)
Tomus Quintus: Volumen Legum (Tres Libros Codicis, Authenticas seu Novellas, Feudorum Consuetudines...)
Fine typography details of great value:
General title page set within a magnificent and rich architectural woodcut frame with the figures of Justinian, Tribonianus and Dorotheus.
Two-color printing: All the frontispieces of the individual volumes are printed in red and black and decorated with the famous Giunti printer’s mark (the Florentine lily).
Numerous animated woodcut initial letters and ornaments in the text.
Charming seventeenth-century ownership notes on the front matter (one dated 1715) and marginal glosses in an old hand that testify to the historical use of the work.
Binding:
Full contemporary stiff parchment (late 16th century) with imposing spine cords. The spine titles and heraldic devices have been carefully penned by hand in ink in antiquity for volume identification. The page edges are finely speckled in red and ochre.
Condition:
Lot in good overall condition considering its age (over 420 years of history). Cracking sound paper of excellent quality.
Exterior: Solid bindings. Note a partial loss/break of parchment on the lower edge of the spine of the volumes. Normal signs of time and dust.
Interior: Interiors well preserved. Presence of water stains (historic and stabilized damp halos) confined mainly to the flyleaves and guard sheets. Small, limited wormholes along the inner margins of some sections (e.g., Tomo V), skimming the text or column numbers without compromising readability.
Inside the work is attached the Certificate of Guarantee and authenticity issued by a renowned antiquarian dealer in 2007.
