A striking mid-20th-century floral still life, dated 1948 from a hitherto undeciphered artist, depicting a luxuriant bouquet of daisies, poppies, chrysanthemums and other seasonal blooms arranged in a traditional earthenware vase. The artist has employed a rich, expressive palette of whites, reds, yellows, violets and greens against a deep, atmospheric background, creating considerable depth and visual movement.

The loosely painted flowers and energetic brushwork give the composition a fresh, painterly character, while the fallen blossoms and leaves scattered across the tabletop add a particularly appealing naturalistic detail. The dark ground beautifully sets off the lighter flowers and emphasizes the vivid red poppies.
