Nicolae Suciu (1923-2014) - Pe sub mână

Large-format glass painting, work by master Nicolae Suciu (1923–2014), one of the most important exponents of popular and traditional glass painting in Transylvania.
The work, entitled "Pe sub mână" as reported by the author's original handwritten notes on the back, depicts a lively and detailed scene of traditional folk festivity and dancing in the Făgăraș region.
The composition is rich in characters dressed in traditional Romanian costumes, set in a bucolic landscape characterized by typical rural architectures and folkloristic floral motifs.
Unlike most icons and traditional glass paintings, usually small in format, this specimen boasts substantial dimensions for the technique, about 60 x 64 cm, which allowed the artist to express to the fullest his chromatic and narrative mastery with a rich multitude of figures.
The author, Nicolae Suciu also known as "Nea Suciu", was native of Cincu, in Brașov province, Romania, and his works are part of important ethnographic and museum collections, such as the ASTRA Museum.
The work is realized with the technique of traditional reverse glass painting, executed with vivid colors and bold outlines, and is housed within the original period wooden frame.
On the front the work is signed at the bottom right by the artist, while on the back wooden panel appear the original autograph inscriptions with the title, the author, the cataloging address located at Cincu, Brașov, and the respective measurements.
The execution period dates to the second half of the 20th century. The general conditions are good, characterized by bright and intact colors, while the frame shows only slight and normal signs of aging consistent with the age.
