Description from the seller
Antique Portuguese majolica wall plaque with lobster – Caldas da Rainha, Bernard Palissy style – ca. 1930
Impressive and richly detailed antique majolica wall plaque featuring a three-dimensional depiction of a large red lobster, produced in the famous pottery region of Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.
This plaque is executed in the characteristic Bernard Palissy (faience rustique) style, where sea creatures and natural elements are depicted in highly realistic high relief. The lobster rests on a finely textured sandy background, surrounded at the edges by detailed shells, clams, and seaweed. The plaque is finished with a splendid glossy glaze in deep shades of red, green, blue, and ochre yellow.
On the back are the original recesses with hanging wire, allowing the plaque to be hung directly.
This is how we know the wall plaque originates from Caldas da Rainha:
1. Regional tradition: Caldas da Rainha (Portugal) has been the global center for Palissy ware (faience rustique) with 3D sea creatures since the late 19th century.
2. Characteristic sandy texture: The base of baked fine granules/sand around the lobster is the visual signature of the workshops from this region.
3. Composition & glaze: The arrangement with the central lobster, mussels, and seaweed, combined with the glossy, multicolored speckled glaze (blue, green, yellow), is typical of Portuguese majolica from around 1930.
4. Construction on the back: The light-colored clay and the baked-in hanging holes in the stand ring are standard for plaques from these Portuguese earthenware factories.
