The author recounts the history of the shadow theatre created by François-Dominique Séraphin (1747-1800). François Séraphin founded this spectacle of magical lanterns and silhouettes in paper in 1776 at the Palais-Royal in Paris, an entertainment that enjoyed enormous success with the public and the court until its closure at the end of the 19th century.
The work was published soon after the theatre’s definitive closure in 1870, in order to preserve the memory and the complete repertoire of this mythical popular spectacle.
