The author, Alessandro Canigiani (1528-1591), was a prelate of Florentine origin who served as Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence from 1576. A fervent partisan of the Counter-Reformation, he distinguished himself by his resolve to restructure the local clergy in a region heavily marked by the Wars of Religion. The book was written in the aftermath of the provincial council convened in February 1585 to promulgate and locally apply the decrees of the Council of Trent.

The work gathers the legal and ecclesiastical decrees setting out the rules of discipline, dogma, and liturgy applicable to the clergy and the faithful of the province of Aix.

Magnificent half-leather binding with corners and a spine with raised bands ornamented with gilded compartments in very good condition.
