For sale is the original and limited screen print “Andy Gill Anti-Hero” by Shepard Fairey, released in 2020 in a run of only 400 copies.
The work depicts Andy Gill, the legendary guitarist and co-founder of the British post-punk band Gang of Four. Fairey created the portrait as a personal homage to Gill, who passed away in February 2020. Gang of Four, according to Fairey, had a profoundly influential impact on his artistic development.
The piece was originally released through OBEY Giant. According to the official artist page, it is an 18 × 24 inch screen print on cream Speckletone paper, signed by Shepard Fairey and limited to 400 copies. The original edition was already sold out at OBEY Giant.
Particularly interesting is the connection between street art, contemporary art, and music history. The motif is at once an independent portrait and a homage to one of the defining guitarists of post-punk.
Andy Gill and Gang of Four influenced numerous musicians and bands. The motif also appeared in connection with the release of Gang of Four’s “Anti-Hero” EP, whose cover is also based on Fairey’s depiction of Andy Gill.
