Description from the seller
The oil painting by Konrad Lessing (1852–1916) depicts a moody landscape on the Lahn near Runkel, with the distinctive historic Lahn Bridge and Burg Runkel rising above the river landscape as central motifs.
The depiction combines the charming river landscape with the historic architecture of the place. The Lahn threads through the composition and, with its calm water, creates a natural line of sight into the depth. The stone bridge arches provide a clear architectural accent while at the same time conveying an impression of the town’s historical significance. Above this rises Burg Runkel on the rocky or elevated bank, dominating the landscape.
What is particularly effective is the combination of nature and architecture: Green banks, trees, and the tranquil river landscape face the massive walls and towers of the medieval castle. This creates a characteristic image of the Romantic German river landscape, in which historic buildings appear harmoniously embedded in nature.
The painterly treatment of light, atmosphere, and landscape colors gives the work a calm, poetic effect. Earthy greens and browns of the vegetation and rock are lightened by the brighter areas of the sky and water. The architecture does not appear isolated, but as part of a grown cultural landscape.
Thus the painting stands in the tradition of late 19th- and early 20th-century German landscape painting, in which appealing historic places and river landscapes were often captured as picturesque motifs. The view of Runkel combines topographical recognizability with Romantic landscape mood.
The frame of the painting has the following dimensions:
Height: approx. 85.5 cm
Width: approx. 101.5 cm
Note: The frame visible in the photo is included only as a courtesy and is not an integral part of the work. Any damage to the frame is not a reason for complaints or cancellations of the order.
