Maurice Lévis (1860‑1941) was a French painter and watercolorist whose work sits between naturalist landscape, Barbizon heritage, and Orientalism. Born in Paris on November 11, 1860, he is the son of the painter Juliette Lévis and trained with renowned masters such as Henri Harpignies, Jules Lefebvre, and Pierre Billet.
He exhibited as early as 1888 at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he earned an honorable mention (1895), a third-class medal (1896), and a gold medal in 1927. His work, nourished by his travels in Africa and the Indian Ocean, shows a pronounced taste for distant lights and scenes of life observed during his travels, placing him in the Orientalist movement.
A painter of seashores, French countryside, and travel landscapes, Lévis left a prolific production, sensitive to atmospheres and changes in light. He died in Paris on January 31, 1941, and is buried in the Montmartre cemetery.
