Most of my work as a teacher has been with children of Mexican descent. Carmelo was one of these, and this is a true story, based on what the real Carmelo told me about his family's farm and animals, and a flood. This farm is a real farm in Arizona where they raise fruit by irrigation. It rains so seldom the country is really desert.— Helen Harter
