Biography of the artist:

Joan Carles Roca Sans is a Catalan painter and multidisciplinary creator whose career is characterized by a firm defense of figurative painting and a constant reflection on European artistic tradition.

Born in Barcelona in 1946, he began his painting activity in the late 1970s, at a moment when the vanguards dominated the artistic scene. Trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts, he chose a different path, drawing inspiration from classical Greece, the Renaissance and the great Western pictorial tradition to develop a personal postmodern language.

During the 1980s he resided for long periods in Germany, especially in Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Munich, where he assimilated the influence of Central European expressionism. From this period emerged a style that the artist himself defines as synthetic expressionism, characterized by formal simplification, chromatic intensity and a strong narrative charge.

Between 1987 and 1991 he purchased and restored the pre-Romanesque castle of Palau-sator, a project recognized by the Catalunya Nostra Foundation with the Castells Culturals prize. Subsequently he promoted the Atrium Torroella cultural space, dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary art and European artistic heritage.

From the year 2000 his plastic language evolved incorporating new investigations on light, time and visual storytelling. Between 2007 and 2016 he developed the Ermoupoli Project, an ambitious initiative that combined painting, sculpture, graphic novel, video and new technologies inspired by his travels in the Mediterranean. In 2017 he declared this project concluded to return to a more essential painting, focused on the capacity of the image to generate multiple interpretations.

His work, rooted in urban and Mediterranean origins, is peopled with symbolic characters and scenes loaded with cultural references. For Roca Sans, painting and life are inseparable: each painting constitutes a page of his own biography. He has carried out more than a hundred solo exhibitions, and his works are in numerous public and private collections.

In addition to his work as a painter, he has published several books on art and aesthetics and has developed an intense activity as a writer and cultural promoter. His production covers painting, drawing, sculpture, installations and editorial projects, establishing him as one of the singular voices of Catalan contemporary art.
