Description from the seller
Pablo Picasso:
“Courtisane avec collier de pierres précieuses, 1901”.
Signed on the plate.
Authorized color offset lithograph.
Condition: the work is in excellent condition.
Courtesan with the Gemstone Necklace or L'Hétaire is an oil painting by Pablo Picasso from 1901.
It shows a lavishly dressed courtesan and stands on the threshold of Picasso's famous Blue Period.
Centered is a woman (a courtesan) who directly faces the viewer with a mysterious, distant look. Her pale skin contrasts strongly with her bright red lips and copper-toned or reddish-brown hair.
She wears an extravagant, voluminous hat. The hat features a striking yellow center and is adorned with a large, gracefully curling black feather that hangs down on the right side.
Her neck is covered by a wide, sparkling necklace (collier de gemmes). It is richly set with mosaic-like gemstones in blue, white and red hues, indicating luxury and status.
She leans forward with her arms wide, her long, slender fingers resting elegantly on a surface or piece of clothing. Her pose radiates theatrical grace but also a certain coldness.
The background consists of a deep blue and blue-green texture with visible, expressive brushstrokes. This atmospheric use of color heralds the melancholy of his subsequent period.
The work is associated with the Art Nouveau style and dates from Picasso's early period.
The flowing, wavy lines of her hair and hat reflect the influence of Art Nouveau. At the same time, the theatrical and decadent atmosphere of Parisian nightlife strongly recalls the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Although the painting still looks vibrant due to the bright yellow and red accents, the cool color palette in the background and her melancholic look already foreshadow Picasso's move to his Blue Period.
The gemstone necklace serves as a powerful metaphor. On the one hand it symbolizes superficial allure, wealth, and the social role of the courtesan. On the other hand, the glitter of the jewels masks a deeper psychological loneliness and vulnerability behind her fixed gaze.
Never framed and kept in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
