In this square format, Medsan stages a lone samurai in the middle of a blaze. Feet apart, torso turned, he holds two swords: one raised above his head, the other hurled to the right, its blade extended by a long curve of fire that spans the entire width of the scene. His long black hair, tied in a high bun, streams behind him, and his downward gaze does not leave the flames burning before him.
Behind his silhouette, a multi-story Japanese castle is engulfed in flames, surrounded by lower buildings and a torii gate whose passage is already red. Thick gray then black smoke fills the top of the image and spits orange sparks. Everything hinges on two registers: the deep black of the warrior and his clothing, the red, orange and yellow of the fire, on a cream background. In the bottom right corner, the cartouche メドサン, framed in red. A suspended moment, just before the blade falls again.
