Painting - Madonna della strada - 30 x 34 cm - Antique - Wood, Paper, Glass - 1900-1910

The painting depicted in the image is a devotional print of the Madonna della Strada (known in Latin as Maria Deipara a Strada or Santa Maria della Strada), the renowned Marian icon venerated as patroness of the Society of Jesus.
The Latin text legible at the bottom of the image explicitly refers to the worship safeguarded in Rome inside the Church of the Gesù ('Romae colitur in templo Nominis Iesu'), the mother church of the Society of Jesus. The work portrays the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in her arms, who holds in his hand a small closed book, both adorned with finely decorated royal crowns on their heads. The print is enclosed in a distinctive double frame of carved wood with geometric and vegetal motifs.
