Bookends - Wood - Lion bookends

Beautiful pair of antique, hand-carved oak bookends (or consoles) with detailed lion heads.
Belgium circa 1850-1900; the lions are probably older.

The ornaments have a pronounced historical look that is characteristic of the Gothic Revival or Neo-Renaissance style. They are made of heavy oak with a deep, warm patina. The characteristic lion masks with open jaws were traditionally used as cabinet ornaments, or architectural elements (so-called consoles or corbels) in libraries and stately homes, but here serve as decorative bookends.
The wooden bases are stylishly finished on the front and top with brass upholstery nails (decorative studs).

Dimensions: 21 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 16 cm deep.

Condition: Good condition, of course with signs of use, e.g. the nose.
