Description from the seller
Pair of French Empire Gilt Bronze Winged Sea-Sphinxes – 19th Century
Exceptional matching pair of solid bronze winged sea-sphinxes, executed in the French Empire style of the 19th century.
Beautifully fire-gilded, with a superb aged patina and the rich character expected from genuine period bronze. The sculptural combination of the sphinx body, wings and mythological sea-creature elements is particularly striking, making these pieces highly decorative and collectible.
The Empire style was the French interpretation of Neoclassicism, flourishing during the early 19th century and strongly influenced by ancient Greek and Roman art, mythology and monumental architecture. Bronze objects of this quality were often used as prestigious architectural and interior-decorative elements.
A heavy and substantial pair, weighing approximately 2.85 kg combined. They can be displayed together as intended or incorporated individually into a refined interior.
