Sword - Tamahagane - Japan - Early Edo period

A single piece forged with a dynamic, powerful Hirazukuri form and a blade pattern that evokes the energetic Torrential Waves (To ran midare).
A wakizashi from the early to mid Edo period (Shin-to era), characterized by a wide, dignified body and a top-class shape. The hamon resembles waves rolling in, and it is housed in a white scabbard with a copper (akagane) habaki. Although unsigned, it presents a strong and impressive silhouette, and the flat blade (hirazukuri) gives a distinctive presence and intensity when held. It combines practicality with aesthetic beauty, serving as a self-defense weapon for a daimyirm or a symbol of samurai status, reflecting how swords were kept close at hand by warriors of the time.

Form, Workmanship and condition
Through polishing, the beauty of the blade is fully brought out, and the condition is exceptionally good. The ji (blade surface) is built on a fine-pressed itame with some wood-grain patterns interwoven, giving a lively texture as it appears to slightly stand out. A faint nie (temper) covers the whole blade, adding depth of character. The hamon features a broad, undulating "notare" with a complex mix of uneven gunome, evoking the moment when crests are shattered by breaking waves, presenting a vivid so-called Torrential Waves (Toran midare) aspect. The habi (blade edge) shows clusters of coarse nie, reflecting light with a clear, mirror-like brightness. In the jihada, features such as sunagashi and kin-suji race in vertical and horizontal lines like a rapid current, and this dramatic expression strongly attracts the viewer. The blade is fairly wide with a slight curvature of about 1 cm, in a Hirazukuri form. The combination of the characteristic broad blade and balanced curvature yields a very powerful and imposing look despite being a wakizashi.

The mounting
The blade is housed in a white scabbard with beautiful wood grain that lends a deep, tasteful appearance. It features a single copper habaki (one-piece copper fitting), and its restrained antique patina further enhances the blade’s solid, powerful charm.
