Description from the seller
A special antique Swedish edition of “Bibeln eller Den Heliga Skrift”, or The Bible / The Holy Scripture, published in Stockholm in 1877.
The text was prepared by H. M. Melin and the edition is richly illustrated with about 230 famous illustrations by the French artist Gustave Doré (1832–1883). These illustrations are among the best-known religious book illustrations of the 19th century.
The Bible consists of two parts and is fitted with an impressive black leather binding with relief decoration and gold-colored embellishments. Both the boards and the spine are richly decorated, giving the book a characteristic 19th-century appearance.
This edition dates from 1877 and is therefore about 149 years old. A particularly collectible object for lovers of antique books, Bibles, religious history, Swedish book printing art, and the famous illustrations by Gustave Doré.
Bookbinder
Inside the book there is an original bookbinder's label/stamp, bearing the name:
A. G. Ljung – Stockholm
This means that the book was bound by the bookbinder A. G. Ljung in Stockholm.
The original bookbinder's label forms a particularly historical detail of these copies and makes the set all the more interesting for collectors of antique books and historical bookbindings.
Condition: clear, natural signs of age and use, appropriate for a book from 1877. The characteristic relief decorations and gold-colored details of the leather binding are still present. See the photos for the exact condition.
