Escuela Virreinal (XVIII) - San Rafael Protector

This oil painting on panel from the 18th century, belonging to the viceregal school, unfolds a deeply devotional image of Saint Raphael, protector, conceived with that spiritual sensibility so characteristic of the American workshops of the era. The scene centers on the figure of the archangel, represented with serene elegance: broad wings softly modulated, a robe with fluid folds that falls naturally, and that protective gesture that defines his iconography, guiding with delicacy the youth who usually accompanies him in his role as guardian and healer. The painter works with a warm palette, dominated by ochres, golds, and gentle pinks, which envelop the composition in an atmosphere of contemplation and spiritual closeness.

The panel support, typical of viceregal productions prior to the full spread of canvas, provides a compact and slightly satin texture, which enhances the delicacy of the modeling in the faces and the transition of light on the garments. The treatment of the halo, luminous yet restrained, and the staff that the archangel holds complete an iconography that recalls his role as guide and protector of travelers and the sick.
