Alfonso de Ulloa - History & Life of King Charles V, AMERICA, EUROPE, COLUMBUS, INCAS, AZTECS, SPANISH EMPIRE - 1610

1610 ILLUSTRATED EDITION ON HISTORY, AMERICA, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS, EUROPE, GEOGRAPHY, SOUTH AMERICA, SPANISH EMPIRE, INCAS, AZTECS, CARIBBEAN, written by Alfonso de Ulloa (1529–1570), was a Spaniard living in Venice as an official at the Spanish embassy, who published and translated numerous major Spanish chronicles and New World accounts into Italian, including a biography of Christopher Columbus. This is a great Dutch edition of the comprehensive biography of Emperor Charles V or Carlos I (1500–1558), originally written in Italian by de Ulloa and published in Venice during the 1560s but not illustrated. This book is illustrated with 22 engravings depicting history and events from 1500 to 1558—culminating in the abdication of King Charles V in Brussels and the transfer of power to his son, Philip II. While standard editions contain only 18 engravings, this edition features 22—including four extra full-page plates documenting the conquest of the Americas. A)First battle on Jamaica, the plate illustrates the 1504 mutiny during Christopher Columbus’s fourth voyage, where his brother, the Bartholomew Columbus, fought Francisco de Porras’s rebels on the shores of Jamaica. C)1533 conquest of Peru, showing Hernando Pizarro stripping the gold and silver ornamentation from the sacred Inca shrine of Pachacamac to fulfill the ransom demands around the Inca general Challcuchima. D)Aztec human sacrifice, this plate depicts the Aztec god Huitzilopochtli enthroned above the Templo Mayor, with priests performing human ritual sacrifice in Tenochtitlan. Alfonso de Ulloa's narrative deals with the overseas expansion of the Spanish Empire (1500–1558), the fall of Aztec Empire and city of Tenochtitlan (Mexico), the conquest of the Inca Empire (Peru), the Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition (1519–1522) the first recorded circumnavigation of the Earth, documents the final years of Christopher Columbus and the revolt in Jamaica, the expropriation of South America's vast wealth, the wars of conquest and religion in Europe, the Protestant Reformation, the conflict with the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean Sea, and the most significant events that took place throughout the world, particularly in the East and West Indies, making this book a fundamental source for geographical and colonial history. The book opens with an elaborate full-page frontispiece summarizing European and American history, the text is within two columns, the Pillars of Hercules, and with the emperor's emblem and motto, PLVS OVLTRE ("Further Beyond"), celebrating his transatlantic empire stretching past the Strait of Gibraltar. The upper frieze illustrates Charles V’s dramatic 1555–1556 abdication in Brussels, while the lower panel depicts the emperor surrounded by subject rulers, military commanders, and foreign dignitaries submitting to imperial authority, most of them bound—or chained—by a rope to the emperor's will, there are European monarchs, a pope, a Muslim sheikh, who will later be mentioned in the book and depicted in portraits. First issued in Italian in 1560 as "La vita e fatti dell'invittissimo e valorosissimo imperator Carlo quinto", this Dutch translation brought an imperial perspective on Charles V or Carlos I directly to readers in the Low Countries. Inside the book there are many portraits such as that of the Kings Francis I and Henry II of France, King Henry VIII of England, Empress Isabella of Portugal, King Philip II of Spain, Emperor Ferdinand I, various popes such as Clement VII, Paul III, Adrian VI, Muslim rulers such as Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (Soliman) and the naval commander Khair ad-Din (Hayreddin Barbarossa), generals and admirals of Charles’s armies, such as the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo (the Duke of Alba), Charles III, Duke of Bourbon. Protestant Leaders like John Frederick I Elector of Saxony, Philip I Landgrave of Hesse, Maurice Elector of Saxony, documenting the internal civil and religious strife of the Holy Roman Empire. The plates were cut by contemporary Northern Netherlandish engravers working in the stylistic tradition of Philip Galle and Crispijn de Passe. Engravers adapted Renaissance court models already in circulation, many of which derived from original portraits from life by Titian, Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen, and Antonio Moro.

Full leather binding from the early 1900s in excellent condition, with titles on the spine and minimal defects and imperfections, the binding is solid, with no cuts or cracks, and is in perfect working order as shown in the photos. An elaborate, reinforced, and restored title page summarizing approximately 60 years of history and the life of Emperor Charles V (or Carlos I); some small staining and oxidation concentrated on the opening pages, along with minor repairs, defects, or stains—mostly confined to the page white margins and not affecting the text or images, as shown in the photos. Illustrations and double-column text featuring well-printed Gothic type. Text and illustrations are intact as per photo. COMPLETE ILLUSTRATED EDITION.
