Dutch river landscape by moonlight is an oil painting on panel by Johannes Verhoogh (1798–1861) from the 19th century, signed and sold with a frame, measuring 34 cm high by 45 cm wide (framed size 54 × 42 cm), depicting a night scene in the Romantic Dutch landscape tradition, with the work attributed to the Netherlandish artist and offered by a gallery in fair condition.
Description from the seller
A finely painted, atmospheric moonlit river scene by the Rotterdam painter Johannes Verhoogh (also spelled Verhoog). Under a pale full moon, a quiet stretch of water reflects the light while houses, trees and small boats line the bank. Figures are visible near the dwellings and in the boats; further out, sailing vessels recede into the haze. The warm glow on the water, the silhouetted trees and the muted sky create a characteristic Romantic evening mood.
The painting is signed lower left J. Verhoogh.
The artist
Johannes Verhoogh (Rotterdam 1798–1861) was a Dutch 19th-century landscape painter, best known for moonlit river and harbour views in the tradition that runs from Aert van der Neer to later Romantic night pieces. He signed J. Verhoogh or J. Verhoog. The artist is also represented in the Groninger Museum.
His pictures typically combine a low horizon, a dominant sky, reflections on still water, modest architecture and small staffage. This painting is a textbook example of that formula.
On the left a row of gabled houses stands behind tall trees; small boats lie along the shore and figures move on the bank. The moon hangs in a cloudy sky and casts a vertical path of light across the water. To the right, vessels with figures drift on the river. Posts and a low barrier in the foreground complete the composition. The handling is fluid and atmospheric rather than highly detailed — typical of Verhoogh’s evening scenes.
Condition and presentation
Oil on panel (or panel-backed support). Framed size 54 × 42 cm, in an ornate gilt frame with a linen inner slip. A horizontal crack runs across the middle of the painting. It has been professionally restored and is not visually disturbing. Otherwise the work is in attractive, well-preserved condition, with an even surface and a pleasing old varnish.
A characteristic, signed moonlit landscape by a scarce Rotterdam Romantic painter — atmospheric, well framed and ready to hang.
