Armand Dayot’s Les maîtres de la caricature française au XIXe siècle is a first edition (1888) published by Paris: Maison Quantin, in a white leather/vellum binding with red borders, 139 pages, 29 x 20 cm, in very good condition, featuring 115 black-and-white facsimile plates and 5 colour lithographs, and includes a tipped-in leaf with a bookplate by Gottfried Galston.
Description from the seller
Like a 'who's who' of French caricature illustrators: Boilly, Cham, Daumier, Doré, Gavarni, André Gill, Grandville, Monnier, Pigal, Carle Vernet, and even Victor Hugo.
A very nice copy of this first edition. White leather / vellum binding with red double ruled border to the front and rear panel. Small caricature and calligraphic titles have been painted to the spine. Marbled end papers.
There seem to have been two simultaneous editions. This one, and a second, also published by Quantin, which is titled "edition du Figaro." They seem to be otherwise identical contents.
This copy has a leaf tipped in, which is the bookplate of Gottfried Galston (1879-1950). He was an Austrian pianist, composer and writer on music of Jewish origin. He was married to the Russian pianist Sandra Droucker. The ex libris was created by Jean Veber in 1911, who also illustrated for Gil Bas. This white binding would likely have been created at that point.
Complete with 115 b/w facsimile reproductions of major caricatures plus 5 facsimile colour lithographs.
The contents are slightly darkened, and a touch brittle to the edges, but still an attractive work.
There is a half title page, but no title - but it doesn't appear to be missing so presumably was not bound into the vellum binding.
xvii + 109 pp. of plates. 29 x 20 cm.
