Description from the seller

2 Volume Set of John Hunter's Papers published posthumously in 1861 by Richard Owen: 'Essay and Observations on Natural History, Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology and Geology'

OWEN, Richard (1804-1892) & HUNTER, John (1728-1793) 'Essay and Observations on Natural History, Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology and Geology by John Hunter FRS, being his posthumous papers on these subjects arranged and revised, with notes ... by John Owen'

LONDON: John van Voorst, 1861, first edition. Collation: Vol 1 Portrait (of John Hunter), title, pp[iii]-xvi, [1] leaf, 403pp. Vol 2 Title, pp[iii]-xii, 507pp.

John Hunter's essays are taken from the manuscript copies made by William Clift FRS (Conservator of the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons). They are published here for the first time with notes by Owen, who was Superintendent of the Natural History Departments, British Museum and Clift's son-in- law. Much of Hunter's manuscripts were destroyed by his brother-in-law, Everard Home. It is suggested that this was done to possibly disguise plagiarism by Home, although this is unproven.

Brown buckram with gold embossed title to spine, cover a little loose, minor flecking and shelf wear, minor foxing with tanning, marks to endpapers. Cover a little loose to vol 1. Each have bookplates: Ex Libris Anatomica KF Russell (220x142mm)

PROVENANCE:
Collection Late Kenneth F. Russell (1911-1987), Professor of Anatomy and Medical History, University of Melbourne.
