Ceremonial children's headpiece from China titled Kinder mutsje, dating to the 20th century, a red velvet base with heavy cream cord embroidery and colorful accents, about 15 cm high and 48 cm in circumference, worn and aged with visible wear on the band and trim.
Description from the seller
Exceptionally richly decorated, handmade ceremonial headdress in child/teen size. The base is done in red (likely velvet), and is fully “built up” with heavy, embossed cord embroidery in cream tones, complemented with colorful accents (pink, green, purple, orange) and countless sequins. The shape is multi-layered and pointed (crown-like), with a tassel on each side, giving the whole a festive appearance.
Noteworthy are the contrasting bands around the underside: a gold-black metallic woven edge, beneath which a bright red strip and a green-gold, pleated piping. It is precisely along that green piping where wear is most visible: fraying and darkening indicate frequent wear and long-term use, which gives the piece an authentic, well-loved character.
The inside shows a pronounced “folk” construction of fabric scraps/patchwork with concentric rings (including denim), with clear hand stitching and loose threads. This points to practical use and later reinforcement or repairs by the wearer/community, something very common with worn ceremonial textiles.
Origin/ attribution: traditionally Chinese (likely from the broader southwestern minority sphere; exact ethnic group cannot be determined with certainty from the available image material). Dating: 20th century, probably mid-20th century, with possible later interior restorations.
Dimensions: about 15 cm tall; circumference about 48 cm.
Condition: worn and well-used; noticeable discoloration/wear on the headband and piping, loose stitching and signs of use appropriate to age and intensive use. The decoration and shape remain very expressive and photogenic.
