Description from the seller

Important and imposing set of 12 nineteenth-century volumes devoted to the comedies of Francesco Cerlone, one of the foremost and most prolific dramatists of Neapolitan comic theatre and buffa opera of the eighteenth century. The lot is composed as follows:
1. The backbone of the famous official edition "Francesco Masi Director" (Naples, 1825-1829) - 9 Volumes: The volumes are presented in a magnificent uniform half-leather binding with marbled boards and splendid spines decorated with gilded motifs in a Romantic/cathedral style. Each volume contains inside two tomes of the ministerial series of the time, complete with the respective general title pages bearing the year of printing and the detailed list of works contained. The collection covers almost the entire monumental obra, including the extremely important final volumes printed in 1829. The volumes included and detailed in the internal title pages are: Tome III (1825): La dama di spirito, La filosofante riconosciuta, La filosofante fortunata. Tome IV (1825): L'apparenza inganna, La Debora, Lo specchio de' cavalieri. Tome V (1825): Il cavaliere napolitano in Parigi, L'Alburnazzarre tiranno d'Ormus, Il Muleas re di Marocco. Tome VI (1825): Il cavaliere in Costantinopoli, La Zaide in Napoli, La Ninetta ricamatrice. Tome XIII (1827): L'Aladino, L'amor vendicativo, A cader va chi troppo in alto sale. Tome XIX (1828): Il re de' genj, Il Solimano, Il mostro turchino, La finta molinara. Tome XX (1829): Il villano pentito, La schiava liberata, L'osteria di Marechiaro, La Zelmira. Tome XXI (1829): L'innocenza in trionfo, Il finto medico, L'ingrato in apparenza, La fedeltà sventurata. Tome XXII (1829 - Last of the series): L'aquila d'Aragona, La dama di parola, Gli scherzi di amore e di fortuna, Le trame per amore.
2. Three volumes of contemporaneous anthology collection (3 Volumes): Bound in half-leather of the period with marbled boards (numbered on the spine as Tome 1, Tome 2 and Tome 3). These volumes present an amateur contemporary binding without the main overall title page, but preserve all the inner individual title pages of the works contained. They contain a fascinating collection of 25 comedies (some with variant text or duplicates), including the comedy La Clarice taken from Tome VIII, which partially supplements texts not included in the main catalog sequence. A unique lot of exceptional interest for scholars of European theatre history, Neapolitan dialectical scholarship, and collectors of Restoration Neapolitan editions.
