Antique charcoal-heated box iron in solid brass with a hardwood handle and iron lever, dating from 1800–1900, European origin, with dimensions about 16 cm deep, 13 cm high and 8 cm wide; fully original and in good condition and in working order.
Description from the seller
Item Details
Type: Antique charcoal-heated box iron / sad iron, complete with ventilation lever and original turned wooden handle
Origin: Western Europe – likely Dutch, Belgian or German manufacture
Period: Circa 1890–1930
Material: Solid cast brass body, hardwood handle, iron/steel lever mechanism
Condition: Fully original and complete; no replacements, no cracks, no repairs. The brass retains its beautiful natural patina — I have never polished it, preserving the authentic aged character. The wooden handle is solid with no splits or wobble; the lever moves freely and functions perfectly. The base is smooth and flat with only honest wear consistent with age and gentle use.
Dimensions: (ca.) L:15.5cm; W:8.5cm;H:13cm
History & Charm
Before electric irons, household laundry was pressed with irons heated by glowing charcoal inside — this is a fine example of that era’s craftsmanship. The adjustable lever controlled airflow to regulate temperature, and the elegantly shaped wooden handle stayed cool to hold.
This piece is not only a fascinating piece of domestic history but also a handsome display item — perfect for farmhouse, vintage or industrial interior styling, or a valued addition to a collection of antique ironmongery and bygones.
