Description of the Work
Oil painting on plywood panel depicting the Cascata Grande of Isola del Liri (Frosinone), topped by the Boncompagni Viscogliosi Castle. The scene, historically known as a favored theme for vedutisti painters, here is interpreted according to the author's technical signature. The composition belongs to the late-impressionist matrix, characterized by spatially textured and juxtaposed brushstrokes, aimed at rendering the luminous effects and the atmospheric component of the village and the cascade. The work can be chronologically placed in the artist’s mature period, between the 1920s and the 1940s. This time frame coincides with the painter’s stay in Rome, during which numerous studies from life were made in the Lazio area and in Ciociaria. The choice of wooden support and the chromatic solutions adopted are coherent with the Italian landscape production of that twenty-year span. On the front, at the bottom right, the artist’s autograph red signature appears. At the back there is a paper inventory label listing the attribution to “Ferruccio Scattola.”
Notes Biographical on the Artist
Ferruccio Scattola (Venice, 1873 – Rome, 1950) trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. He regularly participated in major national and international exhibitions, including multiple editions of the Venice Biennale. Subsequently settling in Rome, he focused his mature activity on painting landscapes from life, documenting the countryside and villages of Central Italy with a specific emphasis on the vibration of light. His works appear in public collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.

Condition
Painting: The plywood support and the paint layer are in good stable condition. The surface has undergone a recent mild conservational cleaning to remove surface deposits, leaving the original chromatic matter unaltered.
Frame: The work is housed in its original period frame with gilded decorations at the corners. The structure is visibly damaged, with widespread and significant losses of plaster and gilding exposing the underlying wood in several places. The frame is considered a homage to the lot and is attached solely for historical testimony of the piece. No disputes or claims regarding its condition will be accepted.
