Eugène Isabey was born in Paris in 1803 and died in 1886 in Montévrain. He worked as a painter, watercolorist and lithographer within the French Romantic movement. Maritime subjects, including ships on turbulent seas, recur throughout his oeuvre.

Object description

The horizontal seascape shows several sailing ships on rolling water beneath a wide, expansive sky. To the left of center is a vessel with a reddish-brown hull, light sails, and a red flag at the masthead. Behind it, other craft are depicted in subdued blue-gray tones. White foam streaks mark the crests of the waves and the water along the foreground hull. The sky consists of broad gray-blue and beige areas with local white highlights. The signature and the year are in brown on the bottom right.

Technique and material analysis

The composition is built up from watercolor and gouache on paper. Thin, translucent color fields alternate with opaque passages, especially in the foam, cloud edges and some parts of the foreground ship. The mast and rigging are rendered with fine lines. Broader brushstrokes form the sails and water areas. Locally, the paper texture interrupts the paint stroke, creating a grainy texture. The work is mounted in a light white mat with dark border lines and a gilded band, inside a gilded frame behind glass.

Composition and form analysis

The foreground ship, with its dark outlines and warm hull color, is the main focal point within a predominantly cool color field. The slanted masts and sail edges interrupt the horizontal order of water and sky. Overlapping elements and diminishing contrasts distinguish the rear ships from the vessel in the foreground. Curved foam streaks repeat the movement of the water. The broad cloudscape occupies most of the image area; the white highlights connect sky, ships and waves.

Stylistic and art-historical context

Dating it to 1866 places the work in the second half of the nineteenth century. The restless sea, slanting ships and emphasis on cloud formation align with Romantic marine painting. The combination of transparent color fields, opaque light accents, and linearly worked rigging defines the formal coherence of this marine on paper.
