Godfried Schalcken was a pupil of the Rembrandt-student Samuel van Hogstraten.

Godefridus Schalcken or Godfried Schalcken (* 1643 in Made near Breda; died 16 November 1706 in The Hague).
Was one of the leading Dutch painters of the late 17th century. In the tradition of the Leiden fijnschilders, he created highly illusionistic, meticulously painted portraits, genre scenes, biblical and mythological histories, occasionally also still lifes and landscapes with staffage. His hallmark was the depiction of special lighting effects, especially candlelight.

An original large Dutch Old Master oil on canvas, attributed to the circle of Godfried Schalcken 1643-1706 and workshop. It is an impressive example of genre scenes in candlelight, for which Godfried Schalcken is best known. The painting dates from around 1700 and revisits the theme of a classical painting by Antiphilos of Alexandria, described in Pliny’s Natural History. Northern painters quickly adopted this motif, and the theme of a boy with a glow can be found in the works of a long line of Dutch painters such as Gerrit van Honthorst, Hendrick ter Brugghen, Jan Lievens, and Matthijs Stom.
