J. J. Rousseau, Du Contrat Social, ou Principes du Droit Politique, published by Josse, Libraire in Paris, in a leather-bound 1794–1795 first-format edition in French, containing 432 pages and the engraved portrait frontispiece.
Description from the seller
Jean-Jacques Rousseau – The Social Contract, or Principles of Political Right; followed by Considerations on the Government of Poland, and on its projected Reform.
Paris, at Josse, Bookseller, Quai des Augustins no. 35, Year III of the Republic [1794–1795].
An attractive Revolutionary-period edition of Rousseau's celebrated The Social Contract, published during the French Revolution and combined in one volume with his Considerations on the Government of Poland, and on its projected Reform.
New edition, with the portrait of the author.
Complete with the finely engraved portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau as frontispiece.
432 pages.
A particularly interesting edition, published in the third year of the French Republic, only a few years after the Revolution of 1789. Rousseau's The Social Contract, originally published in 1762, became one of the most influential works of eighteenth-century political philosophy.
The second work, Considerations on the Government of Poland, contains Rousseau's proposals concerning the political organization and reform of Poland.
Bound in a handsome contemporary full leather binding, with gilt decoration to the spine and original red morocco title label lettered “CONTRAT SOCIAL” in gilt. Particularly attractive decorated blue edges.
The interior is generally well preserved and printed on good eighteenth-century laid paper. Some minor spotting, toning and traces of use consistent with age. The binding shows wear, particularly to the extremities and spine, and there are several small wormholes visible in the spine. Please examine the photographs carefully; they form an integral part of the description.
A complete and attractive Revolutionary-period edition of one of Rousseau's most famous works, retaining its engraved portrait and contemporary decorated binding.
