Antique Italian Baroque wood fragment, circa 1650–1700, carved, polychromed and gilded wood with putti.
Description from the seller
Baroque decorative fragment with putti
School: Italian
Period: ca. 1650–1700
Material: Carved wood, polychromed and gilded
Dimensions: 14 × 11 × 2 cm
Origin: Italy
A small Baroque sculptural fragment crafted from carved, polychromed and gilded wood. The composition features several putti in relief, arranged with a dynamic and sinuous treatment characteristic of the Italian Baroque ornamental repertoire of the second half of the seventeenth century.
Due to its small size and configuration, it probably originally formed part of a larger ensemble, possibly related to furniture, architectural ornamentation, a frame, or a decorative structure.
The surface preserves traces of old polychromy and gilding, now heavily worn, revealing different preparation layers and areas of wood.
Condition:
Condition in keeping with its age. Significant wear and losses of polychromy and gilding, small losses of material, and old holes and galleries of wood-borers. Fragment of a set originally larger.
Notes:
Catalogued as Italian School, ca. 1650–1700, in view of its stylistic, technical and ornamental characteristics.
